I was there behind Abu Huraira and he was performing the ablution for prayer. He extended the (washing) of his hand that it went up to his armpit. I said to him: O Abu Huraira, what is this ablution? He said: O of the tribe of Faruukh, you are here; if I knew that you were here, I would have never performed ablution like this; I have heard my Friend (PBUH) say. In a believer adornment would reach the places where ablution reaches.
Saheeh Muslim (250).
His saying: (if I knew that you were here, I would have never performed ablution like this), Abi Huraira may God be pleased with him means that if he was allowed to do something, he should not perform it in public so other won’t copy him and consider it an obligation.
(In a believer adornment would reach): he meant that the more a person masters his ablution, the more his light on the day of judgment will be.
