AS human beings, our life in this world is characterized by fluctuating conditions making us happy and sad. No one experiences perpetual bliss or misery. Life by its very nature is a test.
All the Prophets (peace be upon them), as we find in Quran, resorted to Duaa as their ultimate ‘weapon’ to solicit Allah’s help when all their efforts would fail.
Allah “Swt” says:
“Whenever My servant asks of Me, tell him I am near. I answer the invocation of the invoker when he invokes Me; so, let them respond with obedience to Me, and let them believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided the right way.” (Quran 2:186)
Duaa is the most powerful tool that the believer has, Duaa has the unique ability to change destiny! yet it is one of the most misunderstood acts of worship. Sometimes we become desperate for an answer and other times we get cynical because we do not get answers for our Duaa!
Firstly, one should bear in mind that Duaa, just like everything in life, has rulings and etiquette that must be fulfilled.
The Messenger of Allah “pbuh” said, “Whenever a Muslim supplicates Allah, He accepts his supplication or averts any similar kind of trouble from him until he prays for something sinful or something that may break the ties of kinship.” Upon this, someone of the Companions said: “Then we shall supplicate plenty.” The Messenger of Allah “pbuh” said, “Allah is more plentiful (in responding).” [At- Tirmidhi].
So, what we can understand from this beautiful Hadith is that a dua can result in the following:
Allah will answer immediately. Allah will postpone it for a better time and we’ll be rewarded for the patience. It will be rejected because Allah knows what’s best for us and it can help ward off harm in Dunya or in the hereafter.
Here are three important tips when it comes to Duaa:
just Tahajjud it!
Allah’s Messenger “pbuh” said, “Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: “Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?” [Bukhari]
Give up a sin and do good instead!
The Messenger of Allah “pbuh” said: “The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Prophet Yunus) when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was: ‘There is none worthy of worship except You, Glory to You, indeed, I have been of the transgressors. So indeed, no Muslim man supplicates with it for anything, ever, except Allah responds to him.” [Tirmidhi]
Istighfar (repentance)
“And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send the sky upon you in showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.” [Quran; 71:10-12]
