The Islamic calendar did not come without meaning status for a handful of months. Today we uncover the meaning of the month of the prophet! “pbuh”
The literal meaning of the word Shaban is ‘dispersion’ or ‘separation’. Because in the past, Arab tribes would prepare for the unbearable heat of the month following Shaban, they would disperse and look out for water and oasis during the month of Shaban.
Shaban, then was a month of hope and optimism to bear the heat that would usually prevail in Ramadan.
Moreover, Shaban was given a very noble status as it was called the month of the prophet! He “pbuh” said: the Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha’ban is my month and Ramadan is the month of my Ummah’.
In light of this, Aisha, the wife of Prophet Mohammed is narrated to have said, “The Messenger of God used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of God fasting for an entire month except in Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Shaaban.”
So this all attests to the importance of this Holy month, be keen and set Set yourself targets for what you want to achieve in your worship for Sha’ban and Ramadan - remember, making the intention to do something good is rewardable too!
