"Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah, from the day He created the heavens and the earth. Among these are four sacred…" (Quran 9:36)
When we think of sacred months, Ramadan immediately comes to mind—its nights are eagerly anticipated, its fasts universally observed, and its spiritual energy electrifies the Muslim world. But what about Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the four sacred months ordained by Allah?
Despite its significance, Muharram often passes by with little more than a mention of Ashura fasting, while Ramadan commands global attention. Why is this the case? And how can we revive the forgotten blessings of this sacred month?
1. Why Muharram is Overlooked
A. Lack of a Unified "Event" Like Ramadan
Ramadan has a clear, month-long focus: fasting, Taraweeh, Quran completion.
Muharram lacks a singular ritual—its observances (fasting Ashura, reflecting on Karbala) are less structured.
B. Cultural Dominance of Ramadan Celebrations
Ramadan is marked by community iftars, night markets, and spiritual buzz.
Muharram, for many, is reduced to a day of fasting or mourning without broader engagement.
C. Misplaced Priorities
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"The best fast after Ramadan is in Allah’s month, Muharram." (Muslim)
Yet, many Muslims don’t even know this hadith.
2. What Makes Muharram Sacred?
Allah elevated four months (Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, Rajab) above others, forbidding warfare and increasing the weight of good deeds.
Unique Virtues of Muharram:
✔ The Islamic New Year – A time for renewal and repentance.
✔ Fasting Ashura – Expiation of a year’s sins (Muslim).
✔ The Month of Allah – The Prophet (ﷺ) specifically called it "the month of Allah" (Sahih Muslim).
3. How to Revive Muharram in Our Lives
A. Reclaim the Forgotten Sunnahs
Fast the 9th & 10th (or 10th & 11th) – To distinguish from Jewish tradition.
Increase Istighfar & Charity – Sacred months amplify rewards for good deeds.
Reflect on Hijrah – Set Islamic goals for the new year.
B. Honor Karbala Without Neglecting Sunnah
Learn from Hussain (RA)’s stand for justice, but don’t let grief overshadow worship.
Balance commemorations with Quran, fasting, and dua.
C. Create Muharram Traditions
Family Goal-Setting – Discuss spiritual targets for the year.
Charity Projects – Sponsor water wells in honor of Karbala’s thirst.
Nightly Reflection – Recite Surah Al-Kahf on the first night (a pious practice).
4. Why This Neglect Must End
The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized Muharram’s significance, yet today it’s an afterthought. By reviving it, we:
✅ Complete our worship – Fulfilling Allah’s command to honor sacred months.
✅ Break the imitation of cultural trends – Not letting Ramadan overshadow other divine blessings.
✅ Gain untapped rewards – Muharram’s fasts and deeds carry immense weight.
Final Call: Will You Give Muharram Its Due?
This year, don’t let Muharram slip by unnoticed. Fast Ashura, repent deeply, and set resolutions that please Allah.
🌙 Tonight’s Step:
Recite Surah Yasin with the intention of starting the year with Quran.
Whisper: "Allahumma adkhil ‘alayna bil amni wal iman…"
("O Allah, bring us this month with safety and faith…")
"So race to [all that is] good!" (Quran 2:148)
