Surah Al-Mursalat: The Day of Resurrection and the Salvation of the Pious

727

The heart trembles when reading the verses of Allah that remind us of the Hereafter and depict the scenes of the Resurrection in a way that wrenches hearts from their places. Among the greatest chapters carrying this profound meaning is Surah Al-Mursalat, that Meccan chapter which was revealed all at once, like a torrential flood that awakens the heedless and steadies the hearts of the believers.

When Surah Al-Mursalat is recited, breezes of reverence sweep over the heart, and feelings of fear and hope stir within the soul. It is a chapter that knocks on the doors of heedless hearts, awakening them with the calls of the Resurrection, reminding them that life is not in vain, and that beyond this world lies a precise reckoning and absolute justice.

🌿 Surah Al-Mursalat and Its Status
Surah Al-Mursalat is the seventy-seventh chapter in the order of the Noble Mus'haf. It is Meccan, and its number of verses is fifty, each verse being like arrows of light piercing the darkness of heedlessness.

The Prophet ﷺ was granted Surah Al-Mursalat among the chapters of the Mufassal, with which he was favored over all other prophets.
From Wa'ilah ibn Al-Asqa' that the Prophet ﷺ said: "I was given the Seven (lengthy chapters) in place of the Torah, I was given the Mathani in place of the Gospel, and I was favored with the Mufassal."
[(Sahih) Musnad Ahmad (16982) and in Sahih al-Jami' (1059)]

O you who turn to the Quran, know that Surah Al-Mursalat is from the treasures of prophethood which Allah specifically granted to our Prophet ﷺ.

🌅 Surah Al-Mursalat was Revealed All at Once.
From 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "While we were with the Prophet ﷺ in a cave in Mina, 'By the winds sent forth...' (Surah Al-Mursalat) was revealed to him. He was reciting it, and I was receiving it directly from his mouth, and his mouth was still moist with it."
📖 [Sahih al-Bukhari (1830), and Muslim (2234)]

Ibn al-'Arabi said: "It is from the unique wonders of the Quran... for it was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ underground."
[Ahkam al-Quran by Ibn al-'Arabi (4/356)]

🌅 The Last Surah the Prophet ﷺ Recited as an Imam Leading Prayer
What an awe-inspiring moment, with which the Prophet ﷺ concluded his prayer with the people using a chapter that shakes hearts with the verses of the Resurrection.
From Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith, who said: "I heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting in the Maghrib prayer 'By the winds sent forth one after another...' (Al-Mursalat), and he never led us in prayer after that until Allah took his soul."
📖 [Sahih al-Bukhari (4429)]
"The meaning - and Allah knows best - is that he did not lead the people in prayer after that."
📖 [Fath al-Bari by Ibn Rajab (7/21)]

From Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, that he said: "Umm al-Fadl heard him (the Prophet) reciting 'By the winds sent forth one after another...' so she said: 'O my son, by Allah, your recitation of this chapter reminded me that it was the last thing I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting in the Maghrib prayer.'"
📖 [Sahih al-Bukhari (763), and Muslim (462)]

Surah Al-Mursalat was the last chapter he ﷺ recited in a prayer while leading the people as an Imam; as if it were a humble testament from the Prophet to his nation before his farewell: Remember the Day of Resurrection, and prepare for it before the carpet of life is rolled up.

It is a farewell chapter, filled simultaneously with warning and mercy, urging the believers to remain steadfast and calling the heedless to repentance.

Thus, Surah Al-Mursalat was the last chapter the Prophet ﷺ recited aloud while leading the people as an Imam. In this, there is an eloquent indication of the conclusion of the message and the beginning of the meeting (with Allah), as if it were the final call from a prophet who bid farewell to the world after delivering the trust.

🌿 Reflect:
How his ﷺ life was concluded with verses that remind of Resurrection and Recompense, as if he ﷺ was bidding farewell to his nation with an eternal message: Prepare for the Day of Judgment, and remain firm in faith.

It was a touching conclusion in the life of the Prophet ﷺ with the nation, so that it may remain a renewed testament: a reminder of the Resurrection, a warning for the deniers, and glad tidings for the pious.

🌧️ The Revelation of Surah Al-Mursalat and the Awe of Its Recitation
Ponder this awe-inspiring scene: A prophet receiving revelation in a cave, the faces of the Companions radiant with the light of the Quran, and the angels descending with the Truth from the Most Merciful... What honor is greater than hearing the verses of the Resurrection as they are sent down for the first time from the heavens?

🔥 The Surah that Caused the Prophet's ﷺ Hair to Turn Gray
From Ibn 'Abbas, who said: Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, your hair has turned gray." He said: "Surah Hud, Al-Waqi'ah, Al-Mursalat, 'Amma Yatasa'alun (Surah An-Naba'), and Idha Ash-Shamsu Kuwwirat (Surah At-Takwir) have turned my hair gray."
[(Sahih) Sunan al-Tirmidhi (3297) and al-Sahihah (955)]

Nothing turned the Prophet's ﷺ hair gray except what these chapters carried of the scenes and horrors of the Resurrection.
It is a chapter that makes the heart tremble with the mention of the horrors of Resurrection and the detailed fate of the deniers. They turned his hair gray due to the immense responsibility before Allah and the majestic depiction of the Day of Decision when it will be said: "Woe on that Day to the deniers!" [Al-Mursalat: 19]

This repeated phrase strikes the heart eleven times, emphasizing that denial of the Hereafter is the path to destruction, and that salvation lies in belief and righteous action.

🏔️ An Overview of Surah Al-Mursalat and Its Major Themes
Allah, the Exalted, opened the chapter with an oath affirming the occurrence of the Day of Resurrection, then detailed the conditions of the deniers and the pious, so that it may be a deterrent from sin and an invitation to obedience.

The Surah begins with the Divine Oath:
"By the winds sent forth one after another. And the winds that blow violently. And the winds that scatter [clouds] far and wide. And the verses that separate right from wrong. And those who bring down the revelation. As a justification of warning or a reminder." [Al-Mursalat: 1-6]

In the opening of Surah Al-Mursalat, Allah swears by the winds that drive the clouds, by the angels that spread Allah's commands on earth, sent by Allah's command with good and evil, with punishment and mercy, and by the messengers who convey the truth to people.

Then comes the answer to the oath: "Indeed, what you are promised is to occur." [Al-Mursalat: 7]
Meaning: What Allah has promised of the Resurrection, punishment, and reward is inevitable; it will undoubtedly occur. It is the promise of Truth that does not fail.

The verses follow one another to show us the stages of creation, the greatness of the Resurrection, and the ease of bringing life after death: "Did We not create you from a despised liquid? Then We placed it in a firm lodging." [Al-Mursalat: 20-21]
These are divine arguments that awaken the intellect and invalidate the denial of the deniers. For just as man was created the first time from a weak sperm-drop, the One who originated him is capable of restoring him after his demise.

🌸 The Fate of the Deniers and the Pious
The Surah depicts terrifying scenes of punishment: "[It will be said], 'Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three branches. Neither shading nor availing against the flame.' Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as palaces." [Al-Mursalat: 30-32]
Sparks fly about as large as palaces, as if tongues of flame are calling them to destruction. It is an eloquent depiction that makes the heart tremble with fear of Allah's station.

Then the Surah gently transitions to another majestic scene filled with intimacy and light:
"Indeed, the righteous will be amid shades and springs. And fruits from whatever they desire. [They will be told], 'Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do.'" [Al-Mursalat: 41-43]
O Allah! After the warning comes the promise, after the Fire comes the Bliss, and after "Woe to the deniers" comes "Eat and drink in satisfaction."

Thus, the Quran balances fear and hope, between deterring the soul and strengthening it, so that the believer is nurtured upon moderation and sincerity.

🕯️ The Impact of Surah Al-Mursalat in Education
Surah Al-Mursalat is a complete educational school; it warns, gives glad tidings, and purifies.
It nurtures in the heart a sincere certainty in the Resurrection and the Rising. For whoever is certain of the Resurrection becomes detached from this world and prepares to meet Allah.
It instills reverence in prayer and contemplation of the Quran.
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite it in Maghrib, as if he wanted to connect his nation between the remembrance of the Resurrection and the beginning of a night of reflection and self-reckoning.
It plants hope in the soul despite the warning.
Because its conclusion is light and mercy: "Then in what statement after it [i.e., the Quran] will they believe?" [Al-Mursalat: 50]
Meaning: If they do not believe in this Quran, then in what speech will they believe?!

🌼 Themes of Surah Al-Mursalat:

  1. The oath affirming the occurrence of the Resurrection, that it is coming without a doubt, and the mention of some of the horrors of the Day of Resurrection.

  2. Presenting proofs for the occurrence of the Resurrection, and mentioning some manifestations of Allah's power: from the creation of humans, the earth, and the mountains.

  3. The warning to the deniers and the description of their punishment in the Hereafter.

  4. The description of the bliss of the pious, their good outcome, and the types of honors they will receive.

  5. Expressing amazement at the conditions of the disbelievers, their severe stubbornness and obstinacy.
